Op 15 maart zijn de verkiezingen voor de Provinciale Staten. Wat valt er te kiezen? In aanloop naar de verkiezingen spreken we met enkele jonge kandidaten en vertellen zij waarom ze kandidaat staan. In dit interview lees je meer over Gijs Broere, de nummer 15 op de lijst.

Wie ben je, waar kom je vandaan en wat doe je in het dagelijks leven?

Ik ben Gijs Broere, nummer 15 op de lijst van GroenLinks. Ik kom uit Soest en ben 18 jaar oud. Op dit moment studeer ik Bestuurs- en Organisatiewetenschap aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Als bijbaantje geef ik bijles. Daarnaast ben ik actief bij DWARS. Daar ben ik voorzitter van afdeling Utrecht en politiek adviseur voor het landelijk bestuur. In mijn vrije tijd houd ik ook van debatteren. Daarom ben ik aangesloten bij de Utrecht Debating Society.

Met welke bekendheid, dood of levend, zou je nog een keer koffie willen drinken?

Ik zou heel graag met een Griekse filosoof uit de oudheid, zoals Plato of Aristoteles, willen praten. Dan zou ik uitleggen hoe de samenleving er nu uitziet en wat alle nieuwe kennis ze gemist hebben. Ik vraag me heel erg af hoe ze hun filosofie zouden aanpassen en hoe ze met die nieuwe informatie zouden kijken naar de wereld.

Wat is je meest controversiële mening?

Om de klimaatdoelen zo goed en zo snel mogelijk te halen, zie ik kernenergie ook als een optie.

Waarom ben je kandidaat voor de Provinciale Statenverkiezingen en waarom voor GroenLinks?

Ik ben erg geïnteresseerd in de maatschappij, ik ken een sterk rechtvaardigheidsgevoel en ik vind het ook heel erg leuk om politiek actief te zijn. Waarom zijn de dingen zoals ze zijn? Wat kan er beter? En vooral: hoe kan het beter? Met die vragen houd ik mij al lang bezig. De politiek is een ideale manier om daar meer over te weten komen en om te werken aan een beter Nederland op een manier dat ik er ook lol aan heb.

GroenLinks trekt mij aan omdat het een partij is die de voor mij belangrijkste thema’s wil aanpakken en ook de samenhang ziet in die thema’s. De klimaatcrisis en ongelijkheid komen beide voort uit de uitbuiting van systemen in het voordeel van de status quo. De uitbuiting van onze aarde en de mens zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden in hun oorzaken, symptomen en hun oplossingen. GroenLinks ziet dat ook.

Voor welke thema’s wil je je inzetten in de Provincie?

Vooral de versterking van de democratie. Dat is hard nodig in deze tijd van populisme, polarisatie en wantrouwen in de overheid. Ook bied ik daarmee een politiek alternatief dat de waan van de dag overstijgt en die probeert om structurele veranderingen teweeg te brengen. Een beter bestuur is cruciaal voor een betere samenleving, omdat daardoor problemen eerder opgespoord worden, makkelijker opgelost worden en vaker voorkomen worden.

Een voorbeeld van een plan is bijvoorbeeld om een generatietoets in te stellen. Voor beleid en regelgeving van de provincie moet er in kaart worden gebracht wat de gevolgen zijn op de lange termijn en mag dat beleid alleen worden gemaakt als de gevolgen voor volgende generaties ook goed zijn.

Waarom is het belangrijk om bij deze verkiezingen te gaan stemmen?

De provincie gaat over echt hele belangrijke thema’s, vooral voor jongeren. De provincie speelt een cruciale rol in het oplossen van de woningcrisis en klimaatcrisis, omdat ze gaat over waar welk soort woningen gebouwd worden en hoe en hoeveel duurzame energie er wordt opgewekt in de provincie. Om nog maar te zwijgen over het mobiliteitsbeleid van de provincie: moet het OV uitgebreid worden? Moet er minder ruimte komen voor de auto en meer voor de fiets? Daarnaast kiezen de Provinciale Statenleden ook de Eerste Kamer. Dat zijn allemaal zaken waar de provincie over beslist en dus redenen om te gaan stemmen.

Wat wil je voor jongeren betekenen bij deze verkiezingen en hoe wil je ze meer gaan betrekken?

Ik wil de politiek, en nu dus de Provinciale Staten, voor jongeren deze verkiezingen dichterbij brengen. Politiek, en vooral de Provinciale Staten, voelt voor jongeren vaak als een ver-van-m’n-bed-show. Dat hoeft niet. Ik wil laten zien waar de provincie over gaat, waarom dat voor jongeren belangrijk is, en dat jongeren zelf ook invloed kunnen uitoefenen door te gaan stemmen.

Who are you, where are you from, and what do you do in daily life? I am Gijs Broere, number 15 on the list of the Dutch political party GroenLinks. I come from Soest and I am 18 years old. Currently, I study Public Administration and Organizational Science at Utrecht University. As a side job, I give tutoring lessons. Additionally, I am active in DWARS. I am the chairman of the Utrecht department and a political advisor for the national board. In my free time, I also enjoy debating. That is why I am a member of the Utrecht Debating Society.

With which famous person, dead or alive, would you like to have coffee with? I would love to talk to a Greek philosopher from ancient times, such as Plato or Aristotle. I would explain to them what society looks like now and what new knowledge they have missed. I wonder how they would adjust their philosophy and how they would view the world with that new information.

What is your most controversial opinion? To achieve the climate goals as well and as quickly as possible, I see nuclear energy as an option.

Why are you a candidate for the Provincial States elections and why for GroenLinks? I am very interested in society, have a strong sense of justice, and I also enjoy being politically active. Why are things the way they are? What can be improved? And above all: how can it be improved? I have been busy with these questions for a long time. Politics is an ideal way to learn more about it and to work towards a better Netherlands in a way that I also enjoy.

GroenLinks attracts me because it is a party that wants to address the most important themes for me and also sees the coherence in those themes. The climate crisis and inequality both arise from the exploitation of systems in favor of the status quo. The exploitation of our planet and humanity are inextricably linked in their causes, symptoms, and solutions. GroenLinks also sees that.

What themes do you want to focus on in the province? Especially the strengthening of democracy. That is urgently needed in this time of populism, polarization, and distrust in the government. By doing so, I also offer a political alternative that transcends the whims of the day and tries to bring about structural changes. Better governance is crucial for a better society because it helps problems to be identified earlier, solved more easily, and prevented more often. An example of a plan is to introduce a generational test. For provincial policy and regulation, the long-term consequences must be mapped out, and that policy may only be made if the consequences for future generations are also good.

Why is it important to vote in these elections? The province is responsible for really important issues, especially for young people. The province plays a crucial role in solving the housing crisis and the climate crisis because it decides where which types of houses are built and how much sustainable energy is generated in the province. Not to mention the province’s mobility policy: should public transport be expanded? Should there be less space for cars and more for bicycles? Additionally, the Provincial Council members also choose the Senate. These are all matters that the province decides on, and therefore reasons to vote.

What do you want to mean for young people in these elections and how do you want to involve them more? I want to bring politics, and now the Provincial States, closer to young people in these elections. Politics
