Jong en op de kandidatenlijst: Imraan el Hamdaoui #16

Op 15 maart zijn de verkiezingen voor de Provinciale Staten. Wat valt er te kiezen? In aanloop naar de verkiezingen spreken we met enkele jonge kandidaten van GroenLinks en vertellen zij waarom ze kandidaat staan. In dit interview lees je meer over Imraan el Hamdaoui, de nummer 16 op de lijst.

Wie ben je, waar kom je vandaan en wat doe je in het dagelijks leven?

Hey hoi iedereen, Imraan hier. 27 jaar oud en loop rond in Utrecht. Ik doe Social Work, ik doe wat vrijwilligerswerk bij kinderen en ouderen en ik klaag vaak over hoe kut de VVD is. Ook ben ik actief bij DWARS als bestuurslid van DWARS Utrecht, politiek adviseur bij landelijk voor het thema ‘Inclusievere samenleving’ en ben ik lid van de werkgroep Inclusie.

Met welke bekendheid, dood of levend, zou je nog een keer koffie willen drinken?

Quint Odaantje, de held van Utrecht. Hij was een man met een vader uit Sri Lanka en een moeder uit Nederland en een van de grote vechters voor de Nederlandse democratie. Hij ging zo ver dat hij in 1785 meehielp in de kleine revolutie om het corrupte Utrechtse Stadsbestuur te ontmantelen.

Wat is je meest controversiële mening?

Als je links bent en je stemt niet op GroenLinks dan ben je fake links.

Waarom ben je kandidaat voor de Provinciale Statenverkiezingen en waarom voor GroenLinks?

Omdat GroenLinks voor meer sociaal huur is en tegen woekerhuur. Omdat we voor klimaatplannen zijn die werken en tegen winst boven natuur zijn. Omdat we voor een betere samenwerking zijn met links en tegen extreemrechts. Wij zijn een toppartij en dat moeten we niet vergeten.

Ik wil zelf meedoen met een positieve verandering in Nederland en het wordt tijd dat minderheden en jongeren hun mond opentrekken. We hebben te lang dezelfde soort mensen aan de macht gehad en we zien nu met z’n allen dat het niet lukt.

Mensen vinden dat GroenLinks te idealistisch. Tegen dat soort mensen zeg ik: er kan meer dan je denkt. Stop met negatief denken en help ons mee om een toekomst in Nederland te hebben waar iedereen kansen heeft om de beste versie van zichzelf te zijn.

Voor welke thema’s wil je je inzetten in de Provincie?

Inclusie, kunst en cultuur, werkgelegenheid en OV

Waarom is het belangrijk om bij deze verkiezingen te gaan stemmen?

Het is belangrijk om bij alle verkiezingen te stemmen. Maar nu hebben we de kans om het linkse geluid harder te laten horen. Stop het rechtsbeleid dat bezig is om onze toekomst kapot te maken, stem op GroenLinks en zorg voor een betere toekomst voor jou en mij.

Wat wil je voor jongeren betekenen bij deze verkiezingen en hoe wil je ze meer gaan betrekken?

Beter OV. Jongeren hebben de behoefte aan toegankelijk en betaalbaar openbaar vervoer om bijvoorbeeld naar school, werk of sociale activiteiten te kunnen gaan. De provincie Utrecht kan zich daarom richten op het verbeteren van het openbaar vervoer, het aanbieden van kortingen of zelfs gratis openbaar vervoer voor jongeren. Maar ook het verbeteren van werkgelegenheid. Denk aan subsidies en initiatieven voor jongeren. Vooral voor de Mbo’ers moeten die kansen er zijn.

Who are you, where are you from, and what do you do in your daily life? Hey everyone, Imraan here. I’m 27 years old and live in Utrecht. I study Social Work, do some volunteer work with children and the elderly, and often complain about how terrible the VVD is. I’m also active in DWARS as a board member of DWARS Utrecht, political advisor for the theme ‘More Inclusive Society’ nationally, and I’m a member of the Inclusion working group.

Which celebrity, dead or alive, would you like to have coffee with? Quint Odaantje, the hero of Utrecht. He was a man with a father from Sri Lanka and a mother from the Netherlands, and one of the great fighters for Dutch democracy. He went so far as to help in the small revolution to dismantle the corrupt Utrecht City Council in 1785.

What is your most controversial opinion? If you’re left-wing and you don’t vote for GroenLinks, then you’re fake left.

Why are you a candidate for the Provincial States elections and why for GroenLinks? Because GroenLinks is for more social housing and against exorbitant rent. Because we are for climate plans that work and against profit over nature. Because we are for better cooperation with the left and against the far-right. We are a top party, and we must not forget that. I want to contribute to a positive change in the Netherlands, and it’s time for minorities and young people to speak up. We’ve had the same kind of people in power for too long, and we can all see that it’s not working. People think GroenLinks is too idealistic. To those people, I say: there’s more that you can do than you think. Stop thinking negatively and help us to have a future in the Netherlands where everyone has the opportunity to be the best version of themselves.

What themes do you want to focus on in the Province? Inclusion, arts and culture, employment, and public transport.

Why is it important to vote in these elections? It’s important to vote in all elections. But now we have the chance to make the left-wing voice louder. Stop the right-wing policies that are destroying our future, vote for GroenLinks, and create a better future for you and me.

What do you want to do for young people in these elections, and how do you want to involve them more? Better public transport. Young people need accessible and affordable public transport to get to school, work, or social activities. The province of Utrecht can focus on improving public transport, offering discounts or even free public transport for young people. But also, improving employment opportunities. Think of subsidies and initiatives for young people. Especially for those with MBO qualifications, those opportunities must be available.
