Niet Mijn Klimaatconferentie / Not My Climateconference

Glasgow, november 2021, in het grijs en grauw van de Schotse herfst vindt COP261 plaats. Dé klimaatconferentie. Twee weken lang komen wereldleiders, vertegenwoordigers, NGO2’s, wetenschappers en bedrijven bijeen om te bespreken hoe we uit deze klimaatcrisis gaan komen. Naja, dat is het idee. In de praktijk was het zo:
Twee weken lang komen NGO’s en wetenschappers toekijken hoe overheden en bedrijven bespreken hoe die minder dan the bare minimum gaan doen om de klimaatcrisis tegen te gaan, hoe bedrijven hun verantwoordelijkheden kunnen ontwijken en hoe overheden er mee weg kunnen komen om toch geen functionele klimaatwetgeving door te voeren. Al dit, met als gevolg een aangewakkerde klimaatcrisis die nu al dramatische gevolgen met zich meebrengt.
Het idee van COP is natuurlijk niets mis mee, het is noodzakelijk zelfs. Een platform waarop elk land samen komt om een gezamenlijk front te vormen in de klimaatcrisis. Het probleem is alleen dat de inactie die ons op nationaal niveau plaagt op internationaal niveau niet anders is. Volgens experts3 wordt bij de 2030-doelen die bij COP26 gesteld zijn de opwarming van de aarde slechts gelimiteerd tot 2.4 graden boven pre-industriële niveaus4. Dit is dusdanig meer dan de 1.5 graden van het klimaatakkoord van Parijs en zelfs duidelijk boven het tegenwoordig realistischere 2 graden. Die 2.4 is natuurlijk ook alleen maar als die doelen ook daadwerkelijk nagestreefd worden. Op basis van huidig beleid streven we richting de – desastreuze – 2.7 graden opwarming.
COP26 liet greenwashing5 in diens ergste vorm zien. Veel gepraat, weinig actie. Dat moet dus anders. Komende zondag, 6 november, begint COP27. Een nieuwe kans. Het moet toch anders kunnen. Deze editie vindt plaats in Sharm-el Sheikh, Egypte. Dat is al controversieel an sich, gezien het feit dat mensenrechten massaal geschonden worden en mensen om politieke en activistische redenen in onmenselijke omstandigheden gevangen worden gehouden6.
Daarbovenop kwam begin oktober het bericht dat Coco-Cola COP zou sponsoren. Coca-Cola, vorig jaar voor de vierde keer uitgeroepen tot de grootste plastic vervuiler ter wereld7, sponsort ‘dé klimaatconferentie’. Een ander saillant detail is dat gezien het feit dat Egypte niet het meest bereikbare land is ter wereld, EgyptAir de ‘officiële vervoerpartner’ is van COP27. Een grote speler in een van de meest vervuilende sectoren ter wereld, als officiële partner.
Dus al met al, dé klimaatconferentie stelt ontoereikende doelen, waar niet aan wordt gehouden. Dé klimaatconferentie wordt gesponsord door de grootste plasticvervuiler ter wereld en een vliegtuigmaatschappij. Dé klimaatconferentie is het perfecte voorbeeld van greenwashing.

1 COP staat voor Conference of Parties. Dit wordt jaarlijks georganiseerd door de Verenigde Naties (VN) waarbij wereldleiders en belanghebbenden samenkomen om te bespreken hoe we met het mondiale klimaat omgaan. COP26 is de 26ste editie hiervan en vond plaat in het Schotse Glasgow.

Glasgow, November 2021, in the grey and cold of a Scottish autumn COP261 takes place. Thé climate conference. Across the span of two weeks world leaders, representatives, NGO2’s, scientists and corporations come together to discuss how we are going to get out of this climate crisis. Well, that’s the idea. In practice it looked more like this:
Across the span of two weeks NGO’s and scientists come to see how governments and corporations discuss how they can do less than the bare minimum to combat the climate crisis, hoe corporations can avoid their responsibilities and how governments can get away with still not putting functional climate legislation into place. All this, with an over fuelled climate crisis as a result, one that is already leading to disastrous consequences.
Now I believe it goes without saying that there is nothing wrong with the idea of COP, it’s even necessary. A platform on which every country comes together to form a united front in the climate crisis. The problem though, is that the inaction plaguing us at national level is no different on an international level. According to experts3 the 2030-goals set at COP26 could limit global warming to 2.4 degrees above pre-industrial levels4. Of course, that is only the case if governments actually follow up on these goals. According to current policies and action we are aiming for – a disastrous – 2.7 degrees of warming. Both figures being significantly more than the 1.5 degrees set in the Paris Agreement needed to avoid far more severe threats to humanity wildlife and ecosystems. Both figures are also clearly worse than the 2-degree mark which is seen by many as a more realistic – though still incredibly problematic – goal.
COP26 showed greenwashing5 at its finest. All chat, no action. That needs to change. Next Sunday – November 6th – is the start of COP27. A new chance. Shouldn’t change be possible. This edition takes place in Sharm-el Sheikh, Egypt. Controversial on its own seen the mass human rights violations and politically motivated incarcerations under inhumane circumstances.
On top of that the news broke at the dawn of October that Coca-Cola will be sponsoring COP. Coca-Cola, having been named largest plastic polluting corporation in the world four years running7, sponsoring ‘thé climate conference’. Other fine detail is, as Egypt isn’t particularly reachable, EgyptAir will be the ‘official carrier of COP27’. A major player in one of the most polluting sectors, as official partner.
So, to summarise, thé climate conference sets insufficient goals, which in turn don’t get adequately acted upon. Thé climate conference gets sponsored by the largest plastic polluter in the world and an airline company. Thé climate conference is showing to be the perfect example of greenwashing.
