Theme night: Completed Life, together with the Young Democrats

On Tuesday 7 November, DWARS Utrecht and JD Utrecht (of D66) jointly organised a theme evening on the voluntary end of life. A topic that fortunately does not concern many young people directly, but still an interesting concept on which everyone has a different opinion.

Two fantastic speakers highlighted both sides of the discussion: First came Angela Kluver, member of the Dutch Association for Voluntary End of Life. Then Carla Dik-Faber, member of the second chamber for the Christian Union. Both came up with many and strong arguments for or against renewal of legislation.

Many difficult cases came up. Discussions included the age limit, the extent to which the government should provide options, and life or death counselling. We discovered that this discussion will never be easy because there is so much emotion involved. The degree of human autonomy and the impact on society are points on which opinions were sharply divided. At the end of the evening, drinks were served in café de Florin. It was a very instructive evening, and besides that, DWARS Utrecht and JD Utrecht got to know each other very well.
