Money overrides Groningen youth welfare in gas extraction case

24 February 2023

MP Tom van der Lee, at the presentation of the report on the parliamentary inquiry, rightly started talking about how Groningen youth have been affected by gas extraction. The report shows that the government considers money more important than the welfare of Groningen youth. DWARS Groningen, the youth organisation of GroenLinks, thinks the government should finally address the problems of Groningen youth seriously.

DWARS Groningen vice-chair Frederiek de Bruine: "Our health and safety are apparently secondary to profits and economic prosperity. From companies like Shell and NAM we would not have expected anything else, but the government should know better." As repeatedly said by Tom van der Lee, "money dominated."

Because of this blind stare on gas benefits, there is still great uncertainty among residents about strengthening their homes. Strengthening and the uncertainty about it causes a lot of stress among young people and their parents. Board member Organisation and Members Hendrik Boven: "It does something to you when your parental home has to be demolished, the home where you were born, where you spent your entire childhood and where you have so many memories." This report should be a direct reason to finally speed up the process of making Groningen safe and put an end to uncertainty, so that Groningen's young people are also offered bright prospects for the future.
