GroenLinkseuveniles make gift of asylum seekers' centre to Madurodam
23 January 2017Today, DWARS, the youth organisation of GroenLinks, placed an asylum seekers' centre (azc) in Madurodam. By doing so, the young people want to indicate that azc's belong to the Netherlands. "The reception of refugees may not always go perfectly in the Netherlands yet, but the fact that we have azc's in the Netherlands shows that we are a country that wants to help people in need. We therefore think it is an important symbol that should also be reflected in the miniature version of the Netherlands," says chairman Noortje Blokhuis. "In addition, we want to emphasise the austerity of an asylum seekers' centre. We grant asylum seekers their own home as soon as possible."
Besides being a symbol of humanity, the young people of GroenLinks also see the azc as a tribute to the thousands of volunteers who help make refugee reception possible in the Netherlands. "We want to extend a huge thank you to all the people who dedicate their free time to making humane shelter for war victims possible. Keep up the good work!", Chairman Blokhuis praised the volunteers.
"Azc's belong to the Netherlands, so also to Madurodam!", Blokhuis concluded. The youngsters hope that the azc in Madurodam may remain a symbol of a hospitable Netherlands for a long time to come.
