Don't let our ice melt!

10 May 2019

On Thursday 9 May, Europe Day, DWARS, GroenLinkse youth handed out free ice creams on the campus of Wageningen University. The youth organisation did this to playfully draw attention to the European Parliament elections on 23 May.

"We stand here with the call: don't let our ice melt! Climate change has many consequences, including the melting of the polar ice caps," said Julia Matser, national president of DWARS. "The Netherlands can take steps on its own, but ultimately we also need to work together in Europe to really combat climate change." The youth organisation is therefore calling on young people to vote in the upcoming European elections.

Despite exams, the campaign was well received by students: many students came out to enjoy an ice cream and talk about the European elections with the GroenLinkse young people. "We are totally in style: blue ice cream with yellow stars for the EU, and it's vegan too!" says one of the young people.

The young people of DWARS will continue campaigning for some time to come. For the European elections on 23 May, they hope to reach as many young people as possible. "The average age in the European Parliament is too high: it is more important for young people to be better represented," they said. Among the European candidates for GroenLinks, the DWARSers have included the two young women Eline van Nistelrooij and Kim van Sparrentak. According to the youth organisation, Van Nistelrooij and Van Sparrentak can ensure that young people are truly represented.
