DWARS Brabant has major concerns about Brabant coalition with FvD

09 February 2020

DWARS Brabant, the local branch of GroenLinks's youth organisation, is deeply concerned about the political situation in the province of North Brabant. Late last year, the CDA stepped out of the coalition with GroenLinks, D66, VVD and PvdA because of disagreements on nitrogen policy. Since then, a search for a new coalition has begun. Last Friday, it was announced that the provincial groups of VVD and CDA want to enter talks with Forum for Democracy to form a new coalition.

Earlier, Brabant's GroenLinks party also spoke negatively about this development. In addition, several Brabant CDA members also turned against cooperation with FvD. Now the regional youth branch of GroenLinks is also making its voice heard. "We find it incomprehensible that these parties are considering governing with racists," said chairman of DWARS Brabant, Nicky van Wanrooij. "After the elections, they fortunately chose not to join forces with far-right nationalists. Now a year on, it is suddenly negotiable for VVD and CDA, while FvD's views and expressions have not softened. Thierry Baudet's notoriously nauseating tweet last week alone should be a breaking point."

DWARS Brabant therefore hopes that the local groups of the Liberals and Christian Democrats will realise the danger of a coalition with FvD and reconsider their choice. They also appeal to CU/SGP, 50PLUS and Lokaal Brabant, the small parties in the Provincial Council: "Don't help Forum voor Democratie get a majority for some small change. Not only the future of your party, but especially that of our Brabant is at stake."

According to the GroenLinkse youths, FvD has repeatedly shown that it is a party that does not shy away from sowing division among Dutch people. Van Wanrooij: "In our Dutch tradition of conciliatory politics, a party like FvD does not belong. In that respect, Baudet's tweet exemplifies the party's political activity. Joining forces with that club means the end of the political middle in Brabant." DWARS Brabant would prefer to see a coalition without Forum for Democracy, but also without the CDA. After all, parliamentary history teaches us: he who breaks pays. Therefore, a variant of VVD, GroenLinks, D66, PvdA with SP as the new coalition partner should be tried first.
