The vice-president supports the president and replaces them when necessary.

So, together with the chairman, you tackle the tasks of the chairmanship and replace the chairman when he cannot do it himself. Thus, together you keep up the contact with outside people and are responsible for the atmosphere within the board. You are also the extra set of brains who assist the chairman in solving problems.
