DWARS calls for solidarity with Palestine

07 June 2017

This week, DWARS, the youth organisation of GroenLinks, kicks off a campaign on the dire situation of Palestinians in Gaza. Under the slogan 'Thirst for peace', they are calling attention to the lack of clean drinking water in the Gaza Strip. During this campaign, DWARS will send a letter to all Israeli embassies in Europe calling on them to lift the blockade. This letter will be co-signed by young Greens from across Europe. Last week, these young people (FYEG) met in Madrid, where a formal position on Israel/Palestine was taken for the first time.

Recently, Oxfam published a research, which showed that a humanitarian water crisis is looming in Gaza. According to the GroenLinkse youth, this situation is too little known among Dutch people. 'What few people know is that in the current situation hardly anyone can enter or leave Gaza,' explains chair Noortje Blokhuis. 'At a meeting with Oxfam a few months ago, an Oxfam Gaza employee did not show up because he was not allowed to leave Gaza. This blockade also prevents Palestinians from building proper water purification systems. On top of this, Macron spoke out against Palestinian statehood last week. Therefore, we can no longer remain silent. It is time to end the occupation of the Palestinian territories and establish a sovereign and independent Palestine. It is time for Europe to work hard for that.'

The youngsters' campaign will include Parkpop, a free festival taking place in The Hague later this month.
