The Flying Pact: a collaboration between PJOs for sustainable transport
21 July 2018On Friday 20 July, our president, Julia Matser, signed the Flying Pact on behalf of DWARS. This pact is a collaboration of political youth organisations (PJOs) from left to right to raise taxes on polluting transport and invest in sustainable means of transport, such as trains.
The pact is a further elaboration on the Terlouw manifesto, which all PJOs signed early last year. This manifesto called for making the polluter pay. To put even more pressure on our government, the Flying Pact once again expressed our concerns about polluting aviation and called for something to be done about this issue by, for example, implementing a carbon tax and raising awareness. It also called for VAT to be levied on airline tickets, investment in alternative means of transport and cooperation at European level to create a fairer playing field between means of transport. The price difference between plane and train now forces consumers to board a polluting Boeing or Airbus. Something must be done about this, which is why green PJOs yesterday presented this Flying Pact to Jan Terlouw, in his hometown of Twello.
