Left Dicks: the growth of Utrecht
20 May 2018Together with the youth of the Party for the Animals, we had a discussion evening on 18 April about the growth of our city of Utrecht. How many more houses can be built and should we really want to? Together with our two speakers, Tim Homan from Student & Starter and Maarten van Heuven from the Party for the Animals, we discussed this.
Tim made it clear in his speech that S&S does see a future in the growth of the city and will not shy away from this when it comes to building more houses. This will mainly involve looking at high-rise buildings, as this is environmentally better and more convenient. He also likes the challenge of combining nature and other greenery when building these houses. The one does not necessarily exclude the other.
Maarten from the PvdD has a different opinion. He thinks Utrecht's growth can also reach an end point and thinks we are very close to this. The party believes that a city cannot continue to grow endlessly and at some point we have to say that additional housing will not do. It would rather see growth in regions around us that are now shrinking more, by building more housing there and providing more facilities.
Both views came out well and we were able to discuss at length with each other. All in all, a valuable evening!
