DWARS protests against gas extraction in Groningen.
30 August 2018On 28 June, DWARS joined the protest march organised by the Groninger Soil Movement. The extraction of natural gas in Groningen earns billions, while the Groningers suffer millions in damages that are not compensated. Therefore, DWARS felt it was important to show our solidarity for this large group of victims. It is time for the gas tap to close as soon as possible, and for all damages to be repaid. It is time for the Netherlands to take care of its own citizens and the climate.
With nearly 20 people, DWARS was well represented in the crowd of several hundred activists. 3 board members of DWARS also walked along. A number of DWARSers had made banners with slogans like 'Life without Beef', 'Groningen in tatters... ...The Hague the billions' and 'We are exhausted'. We walked from Delfzijl to Code Red's action camp in Farmsum. There, activists blocked access to a NAM site to show that the behaviour of NAM and the government is not acceptable.
We hope this protest will make clear what DWARS thinks of gas extraction in Groningen. Read a more detailed account of this action soon in AboutDWARS, written by one of the participants.
