GroenLinkseuveniles are tired of right-wing shouting!
20 January 2017Today, young people from DWARS are handing out earplugs to students in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Nijmegen, Tilburg, Enschede and Groningen, to protect them from shouting from right-wing politicians. The handing out is part of a nationwide campaign to call on young people to engage in conversation without shouting. The young people of GroenLinks see the day when Trump has his inauguration as a good time for this call.
DWARS notes that there is discontent among many Dutch people about the election of Donald Trump. The GroenLinkse youth think that with Wilders we are electing a similar right-wing screamer. Yet it is not inconceivable that the PVV will become the largest party here. Chairman Noortje Blokhuis explains: "Shouting loudly and blaming groups of Dutch people for problems is not the solution. To reach solutions, we need empathy and connection."
With this action, the department hopes to arm young people against populist bluster and call on them to vote on 15 March especially for a politics of hope and inclusiveness. Besides, the earplugs are of course very handy during the upcoming exam week!
