DWARS supports petition on social emotional skills in the curriculum!

19 May 2023

'We see young people around us under increasing pressure and, as young people, we worry about our future. What we need is a solid foundation to grow up healthy, develop ourselves broadly, cope with adversity, and prepare for the labour market and life. Education, alongside home, is pre-eminently the place where we can lay this solid foundation. Investing in our cognitive and social emotional development is essential for this. We need to sow now to be able to reap this firm foundation for the future!'

So reads the introduction to the petition Social emotional skills in the curriculum. Young people are under pressure and suffer mentally. What can help them with this is having good social and emotional skills. Indeed, this can help them better understand and cope with their emotions and feelings. This, in turn, can help them with a safe and good start at school, better educational performance, mental health and preparation for the job market and their future.

Last Tuesday, this petition was presented in the House of Representatives. Iris, our president, attended it on behalf of DWARS. Next Monday (22 May), the 'Curriculum fundamental education and master plan for basic skills' policy discussion will take place. With this petition, we are trying to urge politicians to include this topic and proposal in that discussion.
