189 letters for 189 deaths
29 August 2016This week, DWARS, the youth organisation of GroenLinks is writing hundreds of letters to Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, Melanie Schultz van Haegen. In doing so, they are calling on the minister to pay more attention to air pollution. "Every week 189 people die prematurely from the lousy air quality in the Netherlands. We rarely hear their stories, but that does not make the sadness any less. We want to give each of them a face," chairman Lyle Muns informed.
Back in May, Milieudefensie sued the Dutch government for structurally exceeding European standards. "The government is playing poker with our health. While Schultz van Haegen puts her head in the sand, thousands of Dutch people die every year. Real action to improve air quality is vital," Muns continued.
DWARS believes the government should do more to tackle the air pollution problem. In their open letter to the minister, they call for swift action on clean energy and mobility.
