Utrecht housing protest on 21 November

06 November 2021

After Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, a major housing protest will follow in Utrecht on 21 November. Organisers expect thousands of people, as the housing crisis is hitting Utrecht hard. The protest will start at 13:00 on the jaarbeursplein with speakers on the housing crisis and continue with a march through the city.

“Affordable housing is unobtainable in Utrecht,” the organisation argues. “A house to buy is unaffordable for people on low and middle incomes, and if you are already entitled to a social rented house, you are on the waiting list for 12 years. Our city is not just for the rich. We need to make ourselves heard en masse now to ensure that action is taken to solve the housing crisis.”

The demands of the demonstration are in line with the national housing manifesto. This manifesto demands that the government intervene and take measures for more affordable housing and housing security. The organisers also want more work to be done on affordable housing for all in Utrecht. “We are angry about what is happening in Utrecht and all over the Netherlands. Housing is for living in, not for making as much profit as possible. Housing is a right and for that we need change now.”

The protest is organised by 23 organisations. New organisations are joining every day, including tenants' organisations, residents' groups, activists and local political parties. Everything about the Utrecht housing protest will soon be available at www.woonprotestutrecht.nl and social media channels.
