Housing protest September 12

07 September 2021

There is a major housing crisis in our country. Housing is becoming harder and harder to afford for more and more people and the crisis is claiming more victims every day. Hundreds of thousands of people are on long-term waiting lists, housing prices are shooting up like a rocket and the number of homeless people has doubled in a decade.

That is why the organisation Het Woonprotest is organising a protest, one that DWARS will also attend. Right now, the situation is not improving, it continues to get further out of hand. It is reckless and it threatens the future of many Dutch people. That is why it is time for a broad national movement that says “up to here and no further”. We can no longer wait for the politicians who actively pursue this mismanagement or turn a blind eye. We need to pull the emergency brake and force a reversal in policy.

Het Woonprotest speaks out against the sell-out of housing rights, against the greedy rich getting sleepily richer, against the suffering of hundreds of thousands of Dutch people and against the eviction of original inhabitants from their own neighbourhoods through racist and classist housing policies. The Woonprotest calls for solidarity with all tenants and buyers who are collective victims of this crisis. We won't let ourselves be outed anymore.

That is why The Residential Protest will stand on Dam Square on 12 September with these demands:

  • Guarantee sufficient and affordable housing
  • Regain grip on escalating rent and house prices
  • Stop racist and classist housing and demolition policies
  • Tackle parasitic investors

Retrieved from September 12 at 14:00 is the first housing protest in Amsterdam and on 17 October we continue the residential uprising in Rotterdam.
