SOS Moria: evacuation now

This is an initiative by a group of young people in collaboration with the platform Rotterdam Welcomes Refugees.

On the night of 9 September, the refugee camp on Lesbos went up in flames. Moria was completely destroyed. A human rights crisis unfolded before our eyes. Since then, 13,000 refugees have been displaced, 4,200 children are sleeping on the streets, and there is a huge need for the medical and psychiatric assistance.

The fire is the outcome of years of human degradation. For five years, thousands of people have been living neglected in cold tents, in a dirty, overcrowded camp. On the world's most prosperous continent, we have been sheltering people in what many say is hell on earth. Humanitarian organisations like Médecins Sans Frontières and UNICEF have sounded the alarm, but it has proved to be in vain. European member states are running away from their responsibilities. European migration policy is thus defunct for good.

We do not support the bleak wind blowing through Europe. We do not want to close our eyes to this humanitarian crisis. The situation on the Greek islands is unsustainable. We want a humane asylum policy, where people fleeing war are given safe accommodation in decent conditions. Europe and the Netherlands must work on European solidarity and take in many more refugees.

The refugees from Moria have now help needed. We advocate:

  • A rapid evacuation of all refugees on Lesbos to the Greek mainland and other member states of Europe so that they can finally get a safe, humane shelter.
  • Immediate reception of 1,000 refugees including 500 unaccompanied minors in the Netherlands.

Already 167 municipalities previously indicated their willingness to cooperate on this. Rotterdam city council reaffirmed this last week. As long as the Netherlands does too little, we will make our voice heard. Humanity must return.
