Action for Waste Separation Rotterdam
18 July 2016The youth of DWARS Rotterdam-Rijnmond (youth branch of GroenLinks) drew attention to waste separation in Rotterdam on Saturday 18 June on the Binnenrotte. During the action, members of DWARS walked around in suits made of cardboard, plastic, branches, bananas and beer bottles, among others, and handed out flyers to people at the market. By doing so, they wanted to draw attention to the fact that in many places in Rotterdam waste cannot yet be collected separately.Β
In large parts of Rotterdam, it is not yet possible to hand in your green waste or plastic waste separately at a container. DWARS wants to change this by calling on residents to request a green waste bin or Plastic Heroes container from the municipality. By doing so, DWARS hopes to encourage the municipality to install these green waste bins and Plastic Heroes containers. In some neighbourhoods in Rotterdam, green waste and plastic waste can already be handed in separately, and DWARS would like to see this possible throughout the city as soon as possible.
A one-person household in Rotterdam pays 321.20 euros per year for discharging its rubbish bags, which is a lot when compared to other municipalities. For example, a one-person household in The Hague pays 233.88 euros per year. Chairman Jasmijn Verbeek: βMost waste such as paper, plastic and wood can be reused as raw material. Instead of throwing it into an expensive incinerator, we can make money from it. And it's good for the environment too!β
