DWARSe Politician of the Year (Overijssel edition)
13 December 2020
To close the political year, DWARS Overijssel nominated four Overijssel politicians for the title ‘DWARSe politician of the year: Overijssel’. These people stood out for their extra commitment to a particular cause or group of people. These are them:
1. Pieter Omtzigt lives in Enschede and is a member of parliament for the CDA. This year, he has been very committed to the victims of the childcare allowance affair. DWARS thinks this is important, because the government should not discriminate, nor should it unfairly accuse people of fraud.
2. Deniz Dönmez is Enschede's youngest councillor and sits on the council for the PvdA. He campaigned for more attention to tackling low literacy and campaigned for money for the library. The fact that people have a good command of the Dutch language increases their opportunities and potential, something DWARS believes is essential in fighting inequality of opportunity.
3. Henrike Nijman is a councillor in Deventer for the Christian Union. She signed a letter to her party together with all kinds of other wards to deal more generously with the situation in the Moria refugee camp in Lesbos, Greece. DWARS stands for international solidarity and humane refugee policies. It is courageous for members of coalition parties to speak out on this.
4. Frank Futselaar is a member of parliament for the SP and lives in Zwolle. He advocates for vulnerable nature and the possibility for young people to study debt-free. Our generation knows how important this is to get ahead in life, which is why Frank has also been nominated.
Members have until 26 December to vote. After that, the board will announce the winner. We wish members the best of luck in voting!
