Historical lecture Oproeren Amsterdam

Almost a century ago, in the summer of 1934, the Jordan riot broke out. The cause was a reduction in unemployment benefit. Whereas the unemployed initially received Hfl 10.00 a week, the government reduced the support to Hfl 8.50. This meant a hefty drain on the unemployed and their families.

Protests against this measure were widespread. The authorities hit back hard: 56 people were seriously injured and five people were killed. How all this could happen is the focus of historian Jan van der Maas's lecture.
