Dear DWARSers,
We are approaching the end of the DWARS Amsterdam 2020-2021 board year and are looking for successors for the 2021-2022 year. In this blog, I would like to briefly introduce you to what a board year looks like and which positions you can apply for. A precise explanation of the vacancies can be found under ‘vacancies’ on the website.
If you have any questions please send an mail to one of the board members or email the Search Committee (zoekcommissie.amsterdam@dwars.org)
Features
Currently, the board consists of eight board members, but the number may vary every year. These are the positions you can sign up for:
- President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Board member Politics
- Board member Promotion & Membership recruitment
- Board member International
- General board member
- Vice president (only in combination with another position except president)
Meeting
During your board year, you will meet on average once every fortnight. At DWARS Amsterdam, meetings are open, which means that members are also welcome to come and take a look. During the meeting, you update each other on what you are currently working on within your position. Furthermore, you discuss upcoming and past activities and other (external) matters that need to be discussed.
Activities
Together with the rest of the board, you will organise activities. You can decide how many there are, but an average of 2 to 3 activities per month. Usually, you try to include a variety of green, red, purple and cosy themes in the activities. You can think about activities such as inviting speakers for theme evenings or seeking cooperation with other PJOs or with other organisations. However, you are completely free in this. By corona, most activities this year were online, but if it's a physical activity, you can also use nice locations to organise the activity at. We have a permanent room at CREA that is usually available, but again, a lot is possible!
Committees
DWARS Amsterdam has quite a few committees: the action committee, the diversity committee, the culture committee, the local politics committee, (during elections) a campaign committee, the search committee and the advisory committee. Apart from the last two, committees also organise activities. They will arrange these themselves, but you will have regular contact with your committees.
Time spent
One of the things you might also wonder is how much time you spend on a position on a departmental board. There is no single answer to this. In fact, it varies from position to position and it is also up to you. Each job posting has a time indication, but you can actually make of it what you want. It is a voluntary position, where certain things are of course expected of you, but any extra effort or motivation is greatly appreciated!
