Let me introduce: Tijmen Lamers for the Provincial Assembly

04 March 2023

Soon, of course, are the Provincial Council and Water Board elections. But who should you vote for? In this section, we introduce young candidates. Today it is Nol van Gerven's turn. He is standing for the Provincial Council at spot 7 on the list for GroenLinks Zuid-Holland.

Can you briefly introduce yourself? Name, hometown, age, what do you do in daily life?

My name is Tijmen Lamers, 27 years old and I live in Leiden. I work for the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, at the Social Sciences and Humanities domain. We make sure that research money in the Netherlands is distributed properly. I have also been a board member in Leiden for 3 years, so my free time is well filled.

Why did you run for the Provincial Assembly?

There are a lot of challenges in the Netherlands; on biodiversity, the housing shortage and energy transition, for example. On all these issues, the province has quite a lot to say, and I want to ensure that green and left-wing solutions are found there. In addition, young people need to be better heard in the province.

What are the most important issues for you in the States?

Restoring nature and biodiversity is incredibly important in the coming years. I also want to work for accessible public transport so that everyone can continue to participate in the province. Ensuring there is enough affordable housing for young people and those on lower incomes is also very important to me.

What do you hope to achieve in the States?

I hope the province will become more inclusive of all residents, not just groups who know how politics works or have power. I would like to see an integrated focus on diversity and inclusion, and that accessibility is always taken into account in provincial plans. I also want to push for a fair transition to circular agriculture, and make sure municipalities build enough social housing.

So why are these elections so important for young people?

Our generations will increasingly feel the effects of climate change, which is why it is only too important that we have a voice in policy. The design of our landscape also concerns young people enormously: do we make space for businesses or for affordable houses? Do we keep green spaces accessible for everyone, or do we let property developers build holiday homes everywhere, as is now threatening to happen in Vlietland? In my opinion, young people have a different and new perspective to offer, and it is hugely important that the province starts to notice that!

We thank Tijmen for this introduction! Soon, Nol van Gerven will also introduce himself. In addition, several young candidates for the Water Boards are coming up!
