As DWARSers, we like to stay abreast of what's going on in the world. Watching documentaries is one of the best - and most fun - ways to do this! Therefore, on this DWARSe documentary night, we will watch a docu together.
Exactly which documentary this will be, we will decide together! You can vote below on which docu you would most like to see. The choice is between:
Cowspiracy
The world's biggest environmental organisations are unable to tackle the most destructive force threatening our planet today. This documentary shockingly, yet humorously, follows the journey of an aspiring environmentalist as he frantically searches for the real solution to the most pressing environmental problems.
A Plastic Ocean
In A Plastic Ocean, during his search for the illustrious blue whale, journalist Craig Leeson stumbles upon a huge plastic soup where there should be a clean ocean. In this documentary, Craig's team works with diver Tanya Streeter and an international team of scientists and researchers. They travel to 20 locations around the world over a four-year period to investigate the fragile state of our oceans. They find out the alarming truth of plastic pollution in our oceans and show working solutions that can be used immediately.
13th
Director Ava DuVernay shows viewers the history of racism in the United States and the mass criminalisation of African-Americans. From D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (1915) and the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan to the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Lives Matter movement, DuVernay notes a pattern of fear and division. The director interviews activists, politicians and historians and combines this with archival footage. The title refers to the 13th amendment of the US Constitution. This amendment prohibits slavery and involuntary labour by law.
