Let's Gro: What's the deal?

This summer, the Nature and Environment Federation Groningen conducted research into food that is no longer sold in supermarkets.

What actually happens to it? Where does it go? How much is low-grade processing? Are different chains doing things differently? And can any frontrunners be identified? But more importantly, what opportunities does this food offer? Would you like to know what's going on or do you, as an entrepreneur, see opportunities to use supermarket residual flows? Together with DWARS, we will visit and discuss this acitivity of Let's Gro.

Supermarkets are responsible for 5% of food waste within the entire food chain. This does not seem like much, but it often involves large quantities thrown away at once. Food contributes around 20 to 30 per cent of CO2 emissions. When food is thrown away, all the energy and raw materials needed to grow, transport, cool and possibly process and package that food are also lost. This all takes energy, mainly from fossil fuels. In other countries, we see examples of shops selling food that has been written off in the regular supermarket; there are also opportunities here for Groningen. An awful lot is thrown away and creative entrepreneurs and other interested parties will be challenged during this presentation to help think of possible solutions.
