Algae farm excursion

“Hey, I've seen this event come up before,” you may be thinking. And that's right. A fortnight ago, we already organised an excursion to Eemshaven, but unfortunately, due to the train accident near Winsum, it could not take place. Hence, we are now making a second attempt.

For many DWARSs, the word “Eemshaven” conjures up images of black plumes of smoke coming from coal-fired power plants. So it will also come as a big surprise to many of us to hear that great strides are currently being made in sustainability at Eemshaven. This is because the company Omega Green recently opened a pilot algae cultivation plant there. The algae are fed with CO2 from the Eems power plant and have numerous applicationsand: from meat substitute to biofuel. Such large-scale innovation so close to home is something you don't often experience, of course. That is why we seize this opportunity and go on a field trip to the algae farm on Friday 9 December!

We will gather at 10:00 am at Groningen Central Station. From there we will take the 10:22 train to Roodeschool. People with week-OV travel for free at that time, people with weekend-OV pay €4.40.* So be sure to bring your OV card! As there are no buses from Roodeschool to Eemshaven, we have to take our bikes on the train. A day ticket for a bike costs €6.10* and is also valid for the return journey. From Roodeschool, we will be in Eemshaven within half an hour. We are expected to be back in Groningen between 16:00 and 17:00. On the way back, both people with week-OV and people with weekend-OV travel for free.
