DWARS United retains hope after exciting football tournament

08 July 2018

On Thursday, July 5, nine members of DWARS Groningen participated in the FC Urban Groningen City football tournament under the name DWARS United. They went into the tournament with a lot of confidence. A good warm-up followed first, after which the whistle was blown for the first match against FC Paddepoel.

FC Paddepoel started very strongly and had obviously prepared well for the encounter with DWARS United. Within minutes, DWARS United had already scored three goals. Halfway through the pot, after a DWARSe attack out of the book, a FC Paddepoel player made a handball. But the referee did not see it, or did not want to see it, and denied DWARS United the chance to get back into the game. In the last few minutes, they played all or nothing, but FC Paddepoel had their players well set up and even managed to double the score. It became 6-0.

The second match was played against a delegation from Student & City. Rumour had it that Student & Stad conducted a training camp in secret prior to this match. This was evident from the excellent combination football they played. Despite new arrival Jasper Been hitting the aluminium twice, DWARS United could not prevent them from going down again. It became 4-0.

The consolation final was played against FC Urban's team. A team made up of individuals who had individually signed up to participate in the tournament. And yes, sometimes individual actions can decide a match. This match showed that. Indeed, five individual actions produced a result that misrepresents the match. 5-0. But it was certainly a deserved victory for FC Urban.

DWARS United showed once during the tournament that it can score, namely when Danijel Gačević after a tight cross low over the ground, managed to mow the ball rock hard into his own goal at the first post. That gives hope for the future.

After the tournament, the selection and technical staff met in the Irish Pub to reflect on the tournament. Despite the disappointing result, they came to the conclusion that the tournament created a good team spirit and that it is definitely worth repeating. There were several more hours of drinks and it was very enjoyable.
