Call: keep the west entrance of Nijmegen Station open!
27 September 2022To keep public transport accessible, the west entrance of Nijmegen Station must remain open, political youth organisations believe. They are therefore appealing to NS and ProRail via a protest to prevent the closure of the entrance. ‘The train must remain a means of transport for everyone.’
Every day, hundreds of travellers use the west entrance of Nijmegen Station. For the sake of social safety, and to prevent blackouts, NS and ProRail want this entrance guarded at the municipality's expense. The cost of a guard with a dog keeping watch at these gates every day is untenable for the municipality. However, without surveillance, NS and ProRail are threatening to close the entrance.
Residents from Nijmegen-West will then have to make a further detour via Tunnelweg. Besides being perceived as unsafe and unpleasant by residents, this route is also very inconvenient for travellers with mobility problems or who cannot walk far. So for the next five years, accessibility to the station will be severely hampered, until the new western entrance opens in 2027!
Youth organisations DWARS Gelderland, JS Arnhem-Nijmegen and ROOD Nijmegen think accessibility of public transport is very important. A safe and familiar environment, a fast access route and secure opening hours are important in this regard. In protest, they kept ‘watch’ here themselves on Tuesday afternoon. Through this protest action, they call on NS and Prorail to keep the entrance open. This way, the train remains a mode of transport for all.
