Theme Evening: Privilege and Intersectionality with Sarita Bajnath

On 8 June at 19:30h, we will listen to Sarita Bajnath, an experienced trainer on privilege and intersectionality. We're going to learn about how discrimination based on gender, colour, sexuality and faith also happens in much more subtle ways, but also about how that kind of exclusion can happen in places you don't 1 2 3 think about or necessarily see, such as through poverty, disability discrimination, or (unintentional) exclusion of people with mental health problems. After making a safe space, we will discuss this in an interactive way. Above all, this is the place to share your own story. Using funny, but also serious anecdotes, we will look at what you can do to consciously use your privileges to make the places where you go more inclusive.

Not everyone is treated equally. This is something that DWARS finds very unfortunate. Sometimes it is very obvious. Eggs are thrown at gays, or Muslims are threatened. But also often it is much less clear how people are excluded, and the people who are not excluded cannot even see it directly. This is a form of privilege, and not everyone is aware of it. Every person and group has their own forms of exclusion to deal with, some more severe than others. How can you (learn to) recognise that kind of exclusion? And can you use your privilege to do something about it? In a safe environment, we will discuss this at length with Sarita, who has been training on these issues for years and knows a lot about them, both from her job and her daily life. By sharing your own stories, you will find out how this also plays out in your life every day. Together we will look at how you, and all of us, can make DWARS an inclusive organisation, and how you can be an inclusive ally in your daily life. What is your story?
