On Monday 31 July at 19.30, DWARS Arnhem-Nijmegen is organising a substantive evening on marriage. The evening will be opened by Else Spierings with a talk on the history of marriage. Next, Max de Blank will talk about “minimal marriage” based on his thesis. Finally, there will be room for questions and discussion. The evening will take place at GroenLinks's campaign premises in Arnhem.

In 2016, Young Green in Belgium proposed to establish marriage for ‘legal friendships’. DWARS also stated in its current political programme that it should be possible “to legally establish mutual friendships with a maximum of two friends, with whom they have just als close relatives get certain leave and inheritance rights”. But what is actually the political-theoretical background to this?
In 2012, liberal feminist Elizabeth Brake released the book ‘Minimising Marriage: Marriage, Morality, and the Law’. In it, his defends her proposal called ‘minimal marriage,’ which opens marriage to all relationships in which care takes place. Does this proposal contribute to a more just world? What power mechanisms are behind it? Does ‘minimal marriage’ constitute a liberating discourse? And what can DWARS do with a proposal like this?
