Choose the ideological course deliberately (motion before the GroenLinks congress)

08 June 2025

This motion comes from the boards of DWARS and the Young Socialists, we call on the party boards to make a weighted democratic consideration of the ideological direction, keeping in mind the different currents within the parties.

To table this, we need support from people who are members of GroenLinks. There is a form below the motion, please fill it in if you want to support the motion.

Below is the motion:

The GroenLinks Congress, held on 21 June 2025;

Noting that:

* GroenLinks and Labour Party will take a decision on merging into a new party today, while also presenting a discussion paper as the start of the ideological direction;
* GroenLinks and Labour Party have thus not yet determined their joint ideology;
* Our left-wing cooperation has recently been called a ‘(green) social democratic movement’ by grassroots representatives and on official party channels.

Whereas:

* GroenLinks and Labour Party have origins in various left-wing ideological movements, including socialism, social democracy and ecologism;
* Contemporary developments such as the housing crisis, the climate crisis, and the power grab of Big Tech reinforce the call for a new economic system as an alternative to capitalism;
* This shift is also visible among the new generation of our left movement, such as many members of DWARS and JS, who are having ideological conversations in which ‘eco-socialism’ is evident and ‘social democracy’ is defined as ‘democratic socialism through the parliamentary route’;
* Members of GroenLinks and Labour ultimately need to make a considered choice of a common ideological direction, with both an analysis of how the world works now, and a social vision for the future;
* Our ideological direction should provide an integral social -and ecologically just narrative for the left's struggles of the working class and other marginalised groups, so that the party as a broad left movement connects with the struggles of social movements.

Calls on the Party leadership:

* Balance the ideological traditions of GroenLinks and Labour Party (socialism, social democracy, ecologism, eco-socialism, etc.) with our analysis of society and the interests of the working class and other marginalised groups therein;
* Taking these trade-offs into an open democratic process with members, to arrive at a supported ideological base that answers fundamental issues such as systemic inequality, ecological depletion and the power of capital;
* In doing so, also connect with social movements and collective struggles outside parliament.

And moves on to the order of business.
