Petition Safe Valkenberg

04 September 2025

On 4 September 2025, DWARS Brabant-Zeeland a JS Brabant-Zeeland started a petition together with Luc Goos (former chairman DWARS Brabant-Zeeland and national board member DWARS).

After a fun night out in Breda, many people head towards the railway station to catch the bike, train or bus home. It is then obvious to walk through Valkenbergpark. But this park gives many people an unsafe feeling.

Recent weeks have once again highlighted the need for safety in public spaces. This week, women in Eindhoven were even attacked during a bike ride in protest for a safe night.

For many people, especially women, this stretch feels terrifying. The main path is lit only by lampposts, one of which is regularly broken. In addition, you have a side path every few metres, where there are no lights. This was once devised to make walking routes safer by keeping people on one path, but you don't get that feeling here at all.

Last year, there were temporarily two extra light poles in the park. So the municipality sees the problem, but now is the time to act. With this petition, we want to send a strong signal:

“Breda municipality, ensure a safe Valkenberg!”

DWARS Brabant-Zeeland and Young Socialists Brabant-Zeeland join forces with Luc Goos. Together they advocate for:

  • Better lighting of the main path, such as with lights on the ground along the path.
  • Better lighting of side paths.
  • Investigate deployment of atmosphere management/supervisors on nightlife nights.
